Breastfeeding: Proper Start, Technique and Support

Breastfeeding is a skill that develops gradually between mother and baby. Early, practical guidance helps with proper latching, effective milk transfer and managing difficulties without guilt or pressure.

Symptoms and signs of effective breastfeeding

During effective breastfeeding the baby has a deep latch, rhythmic sucking movements and audible swallowing. After a feeding the baby usually appears calm, while the breast becomes softer.

Signs that need evaluation

Severe or persistent nipple pain, cracks, hard and painful breasts, fever, few wet diapers, drowsiness during feeding or inadequate weight gain need timely assessment.

Diagnosis and evaluation of breastfeeding

Assessment includes observation of a complete feeding, checking the position of mother and baby, the latch, swallowing and the mother's comfort.

Assessment of milk intake

Weight progression, wet diapers, bowel movements, alertness and the clinical picture of the newborn are all considered together. A single indicator is not enough for a safe conclusion.

Treatment and practical support

Management starts with correction of position and latch, frequent skin-to-skin contact and feeding based on the baby's hunger cues. The plan is adapted to the needs of the family.

Management of common difficulties

For breast engorgement, blocked duct, pain or suspected mastitis, personalized instructions are given. Fever, worsening redness or persistent symptoms require medical evaluation.
